Jennifer Lopez: “You Can Always Reinvent Yourself”

J.Lo is back! After a long absence from the cinema, the superstar celebrates her return to the cinema with the feelgood comedy “Manhattan Queen”. She wins us over as a woman in her mid-forties who reinvents her life.

Jennifer Lopez previously played a young working-class woman in the successful comedy “Maid in Manhattan”. In “Manhattan Queen”, she now plays Maya, a supermarket employee who shows that it’s never too late for a radical new beginning. Maya learns that you don’t have to let yourself get stuck in the rut of everyday life: “you can always reinvent yourself”, opines Jennifer Lopez. “All your life, you keep on evolving. This is true for everyone, but it’s particularly important for women. The only thing that can stop you is you”. Lopez is all too familiar with the quantum leap involved in getting to the other side. She grew up in the Bronx and spent the first 25 years of her life there: “I remember taking the train downtown at the beginning of my career as a dancer. The difference with the Bronx was enormous”, she says. “It’s like landing on another planet. It does something to you. You’re thinking, ‘I’ve made it now!’ It’s like in ‘New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra: ‘If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.’.”
