“Avengers” Directors: “A Big Challenge”

“Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo were faced with their biggest-ever challenge – getting both event movies on track at the same time.

Filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo developed “Avengers: Endgame” months before the shooting and theatrical release of “Avengers: Infinity War”: “Normally we finish a film first, then process that film and think about what to do next”, says Anthony Russo. “The processing of the film is inspiration for the rest of the journey. But for these two films, everything was completely different. Basically, we had to develop both films in parallel. We looked at them as two different films, but in our own minds we also thought of the big picture, of connections. In my opinion, there are theatrical connections between all films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ‘The Return of the First Avenger’ is linked with ‘The First Avenger: Civil War’ and this in turn is linked with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Making these two films at the same time was a really big and complex challenge. Managing this was only possible with an experienced team, as we have with Marvel and our productions. After all, the stories are so complex and the size of the project was such that you needed a very well-oiled production machinery to make two films at the same time”.
